Secret Identities. Extraordinary Powers. She wants vengeance. He wants justice.
The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies — humans with extraordinary abilities — who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone… except the villains they once overthrew.
Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice — and in Nova. But Nova’s allegiance is to a villain who has the power to end them both.
Science Fiction – Young Adult
As you probably know, I’m a huge fan of Marissa Meyer’s previous series The Lunar Chronicles. I’m also a big fan of super-heroes movies (Marvel Fangirl over here). So obviously, this book sounded just perfect for me. And yet, for some obscure reason, it took me forever to pick it up 😅 !
I had very high expectations for this book, especially because all the reviews I had seen were unanimoulsy positive. Well, I can now tell you, it did not let me down. I love everything about this book. For me, Renegades is a great novel that has solidified Marissa Meyer as one of my favorite authors.
Right from the start, it grapped me. The prologue is so intense, and it pulled me in the story and unique world of this book. I “read” this book via audiobook and after a few minutes of listening to it I didn’t want to stop. Whenever I had a spare second, I had to keep on reading.
“One cannot be brave who has no fear.”
What I loved most about this novel was the world of super-heroes imagined by the author. I loved discovering the characters, their super-hero names, their powers and their back stories. Furthermore, the mythology was really fascinating and I can’t wait to now more about it in the next books.
Also I adored the characters, especially Nova. Her story moved me and I admire her… she’s so strong and she’s one kick ass protagonist. I also like that she’s such a complex character. With her it’s not black or white, she struggles a lot with the idea of wrong and right. That made her more real for me. Chapter after chapter we get to know her a little bit more, and I can’t wait to see more from her.
However, I wasn’t Adrian’s biggest fan, even though I liked him. To me, he just wasn’t has interesting as Nova. That being said, I loved his gang and all the secondary characters. Some of them had very fascinating origin stories and I’m hoping for more of them in Archenemies.
Finally, the intrigue was just great. I’ll admit it was a bit slow at times, but that wasn’t a problem for me because the pace was always well managed by the author. The final act was insane, intense and really caught me off-guard. I never saw the ending coming and that’s further proof that Renegades is a fantastic book.
Long story short, if you like sci-fy novels and super-heroes, you need to read this book which is a new favorite of mine.
