Bookish News – February 2018

Hi readers ! It’s time to check out the latest bookish news. Including, some exciting new books, gorgeous cover reveals and amazing new synopsis. Ok ? Go !

🚨 A new project and a stunning cover for V.E. Schwab

As you probably know, next fall we will finally get to read Vengeful. This is a highly anticipated novel, as it as the sequel to Vicious, which came out in 2013. A little while ago, we discovered the new cover for Vicious (gorgeous). And now, we finally get to see the cover for Vengeful as well as a synopsis :

« Sydney once had Serena—beloved sister, betrayed enemy, powerful ally. But now she is alone, except for her thrice-dead dog, Dol, and then there’s Victor, who thinks Sydney doesn’t know about his most recent act of vengeance.

Victor himself is under the radar these days—being buried and re-animated can strike concern even if one has superhuman powers. But despite his own worries, his anger remains. And Eli Ever still has yet to pay for the evil he has done. »

And the good news don’t stop there for Schwab’s fans. Indeed, the best-selling author announced that she was working on a prequel to her Shades of Magic series, in the form of a graphic novel. This spin-off will focus on the youth of Rhy and Kell’s father the King Maxim Maresh. The first volume entitled Shades of Magic: The Steel Prince, will come out next October. Here’s a brief synopsis:

« When Maresh is sent to a violent and unmanageable port city far away to cut his military teeth on strict orders from his father, King Nokil Maresh, he encounters an unruly band of soldiers, a lawless landscape, and a newly returned pirate queen. »

🚨 Discover Angie Thomas’ next book

Angie Thomas, best-selling author of The Hate U Give is currently finishing her second novel. Intitled On The Come Up, this novel will come out next June. So far, we knew very little about this book. But now, we have a cover, a synospis and even a glimpse at the opening sentence of the novel.

« Sixteen-year-old Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. Or at least get some streams on her mixtape. As the daughter of an underground rap legend who died right before he hit big, Bri’s got massive shoes to fill. But when her mom unexpectedly loses her job, food banks and shut-off notices become as much a part of her life as beats and rhymes. With bills piling up and homelessness staring her family down, Bri no longer just wants to make it—she has to make it. »

I adore this cover, which is both minimalist and powerful. I especially like that it kinda matches the cover for The Hate U Give. As for the first sentence of the book (above), it definetely makes me want to read On The Come Up. Moreover, I recently read The Hate U Give (review to come) and I loved it. So I cannot wait to read this new book.

🚨 Cover reveal for “The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy”

In 2017, you must have heard about The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue written by Mackenzie Lee. This best-selling book made a lot of noise, and everyone seemed to love it. Well in 2018, Lee comes back with the second book in the series: The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy. It will come out in October and focus on Felicity, Monty’s sister (he was the main character in the first book). Now, let’s take a look at the cover and the synopsis.

However, her intellect and passion will never be enough in the eyes of the administrators, who see men as the sole guardians of science.

But then a small window of hope opens. Doctor Alexander Platt, an eccentric physician that Felicity idolizes, is looking for research assistants, and Felicity is sure that someone as forward thinking as her hero would be willing to take her on. However, Platt is in Germany, preparing to wed Felicity’s estranged childhood friend Johanna. Not only is Felicity reluctant to opening old wounds, she also has no money to make the trip.

Luckily, a mysterious young woman is willing to pay Felicity’s way, so long as she’s allowed to travel with Felicity disguised as her maid. In spite of her suspicions, Felicity agrees, but once the girl’s true motives are revealed, Felicity becomes part of a perilous quest that will lead her from the German countryside to the promenades of Zurich to secrets lurking beneath the Atlantic. »

🚨 A cover and a synopsis for Frankestein’s fiancée

A couple of months ago, Kiersten White – author of the best-selling And I Darken series – announced that she was working on a novel inspired by Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Indeed, to celebrate the 200th anniversaty of the litterature classic, White will publish The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein next September.

« Elizabeth Lavenza hasn’t had a proper meal in weeks. Her thin arms are covered with bruises from her “caregiver,” and she is on the verge of being thrown into the streets . . . until she is brought to the home of Victor Frankenstein, an unsmiling, solitary boy who has everything–except a friend.

Victor is her escape from misery. Elizabeth does everything she can to make herself indispensable–and it works. She is taken in by the Frankenstein family and rewarded with a warm bed, delicious food, and dresses of the finest silk. Soon she and Victor are inseparable.

But her new life comes at a price. As the years pass, Elizabeth’s survival depends on managing Victor’s dangerous temper and entertaining his every whim, no matter how depraved. Behind her blue eyes and sweet smile lies the calculating heart of a girl determined to stay alive no matter the cost . . . as the world she knows is consumed by darkness. »
